Presenter/Participant Media Information:
Digital presentation equipment: Data projectors (2) will be available for connection to laptop computers. In addition, two, Windows-based
laptops loaded with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
will be available for use by presenters. Participants may bring
their presentation data on CD or Zip Disk (100MB or 250MB) for use with these
computers or may bring their own laptops (Apple or PC) for connection to
the data projectors.
Conventional presentation equipment: VCR/DVD/Monitors (2),
Slide projectors/remotes/carosels (4 - 2 sets of 2), and overhead
projectors (2) will be provided.
Support equipment: Indirect access to the following
equipment will be provided- 8-1/2x14 flatbed scanner, CDR/CDRW
burner (using your CDs), 11x17 color inkjet printer, and photocopier.
Cellular phones: Be advised that cellular phone coverage is
unavailable at the conference center and camp areas. Hiking up to
the lake area may achieve access for some users.
E-Mail/Internet access:
1. The Waycross offices have dial-up internet access. They have
graciously offered the intermittent use of one of their computers and
connection for participants to check email. The computer can be used by
participants on an "as available" basis for checking email
only. The user must be able to utilize a web-based system (web browser)
to access their email for this to work for them. No other email client
software can be installed or used.
2. There is a phone jack with potential internet access in a very, very
small room that they call "The Quiet Room". Participants can
connect their own laptops to this jack and use their modems if desired.
However, the participant must have their own dial-up ISP with either a
local phone number or must use a calling card number in their dial-up
string to pay for the long distance charges.
Please contact the site logistics
support person, Jeff Culp if you
have other equipment/media needs.

Things
to Bring
For others at the Retreat:
1. Green Quilt: In keeping with our theme, the idea is to bring an 8.5 x 11 map of your city (adopted, born, or otherwise) portraying its green features: natural, technical, societal, historical, or other... including parkways, bicycle trails, institutions supporting the environment, and so on. Give us an idea of a patchwork of green things that make a quilt in your city or town. Bring
42 copies to pass out and
briefly describe while you introduce yourself. Let's invent a geography.
-- AND / OR --
2. Omiyage: SBSE has a tradition of exchanging teaching "omiyage"
(gifts) at the evening program. Please bring a favorite teaching aid in
sufficient quantity for all participants (42), to the Teaching Exchange during
our first evening program on August 11. Past favors have included a portable
sundial from Cris Benton, HVAC design shareware from Eric Angevine, cool
lighting slides from Barbara Erwine, Energy Scheming baseball caps from G. Z.
Brown's team, textbooks from Amana Miller at Wiley, a pocket balometer from Troy
Peters, Bring cool stuff to share!
For Yourself:
Attire at Waycross: The conference/lodging/dining center is
entirely air conditioned. Venturing into the adjacent camp area
and grounds is of course another matter. August in Indiana is
usually VERY warm with highs routinely in the high eighties to low nineties.
Humidity routinely reaches 75 percent-plus. Evenings are usually warm
but can become cool and clammy as well. Consider also that August
is the height of mosquito season and selection of outdoor attire might
include this as a consideration in addition to thermal comfort. Mosquito
repellent is, of course, a good idea also, especially in the
evenings. There are sports fields and courts available so choose
footwear accordingly. The hiking trails are mild to moderate
inclines and some fallen tree hopping is required. Unfortunately,
due to scheduling conflicts we will not be able to utilize the swimming facilities.
The retreat theme is of course casual.
Attire in Columbus: Comfortable walking shoes are a
must. We will be doing quite a bit of walking on Wednesday.
The Wednesday evening banquet in Columbus is at a nice restaurant but
there is no dress code.
Equipment: Your camera of course! Great people and
places will abound. If you would like to fish the lake (catch and
release) you will need to bring your own equipment/tackle/bait.
Libations: As summer camp will not be in session there are
no young impressionable campers to adversely influence. Waycross
allows alcoholic beverages at their facility but will not provide
them. The conference center is fairly remote so you may want to
consider picking up anything that you would like on the drive in.
Shuttle drivers and the site logistics support person can of course be
bribed to make "emergency" runs and/or stops. There are
a couple of common rooms at the facility that have refrigerators for
storage of cold items.
Please contact the site logistics
support person, Jeff Culp if you
have questions.
